Meet the team
Kevin Bates, B. Eng., MSc
Scientific DirectorKevin Bates is the Scientific Director of Spiralis Medical.
Kevin completed his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical-Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ottawa in 2018. He then pursued a Master's degree at McGill University (2019–2021) to deepen his experience in the characterization of biological materials, performing biomechanical testing of aortic tissue collected during open-heart surgical procedures. He is a Ph.D. candidate in Chemical Engineering at McGill University, where his research sits at the intersection of engineering and cardiac surgery, specializing in the biomechanical characterization of aortic tissue and procedural planning using 3D modeling and printing.
Since 2019, he has worked within multidisciplinary groups of cardiologists, radiologists, and surgeons, and his doctoral research applies computational fluid dynamics, machine-learning-based patient stratification, and novel flow-loop design to the study of aortic aneurysms.
Kevin is a co-author of multiple peer-reviewed publications and is a recipient of the FRQNT Doctoral Research Scholarship, the Ulmer-Lamothe PhD Award, and the McGill Graduate Excellence Award.
